China Calling

At ‘China Calling’ radio and podcast show our focus is on the alternative and independent music scene of China. Each episode features bands or solo performers music and snapshot into their life, as well as interesting facts on China’s music scene. We research, interview bands, dig deep into the unknown world and find musicians and people who are doing something different, changing the people’s view on China’s music, art, lifestyle and taking over the world…join us together, on the discovery of a new sound, refreshing bands and China’s alternative voice! 

 Vlatka Jovanovic

Vlatka Jovanovic is an international journalist, reporter, producer, radio personality and production director. She started her radio show China Calling on GFM.FM Radio in Hong Kong but soon transferred to Billboard Radio China (BRC). Her show, China Calling is the first radio show outside of Mainland China to talk about the Chinese alternative and independent music scene and soon after its first streaming became the lead show on Billboard Radio. Vlatka traveled around China to cover music festivals, events, club shows and interviewed musicians and people involved within the music industry, which eventually lead to her move to the capital of music and art, Beijing.


She interviewed most of the musicians in the independent music scene of China and lots of international bands on the show were: The Prodigy, The Vaccines, Jagwar Ma, The Cribs, The Libertines, Ride, Dengue Fever, Modestep, Kool and the Gang, The Skatalites, Swim Deep, Ratatat, Blackalicious, The Hinds, Perfume Genious, Ricky Maymi from Brian Jonestown Massacre,Tyson Meade from Defenestration and Chainsaw Kittens, Clean Bandit, Lawson, Orchestra Baobab and many others.  


Her work also includes writing and reporting for the New York-based paper, The Epoch Times and Chinese Global Times in Beijing.  She also runs her own production company, working on music festivals and live events, artist bookings as well as producing and hosting a new radio show 'Pumping On Your Stereo' on Beijing's Nr. 1 radio station, Tangsuan Radio.
